Addiction Treatment Leadership Day  (11 October 2007)

Wellington (National event)

These events, organised by the National Committee for Addiction Treatment (NCAT) and funded by the Ministry of Health through Matua Raki, the Addiction Workforce Development Programme, are held three times a year for leaders in the addiction treatment and allied fields to share information and practice, and discuss issues of importance in policy, planning and service delivery.  They are also an opportunity for government and NCAT to hear the sector’s voice and use that feedback to inform their work and direction.

Lynette Hutson (Salvation Army) hosted the Day’s proceedings, and invited Rawiri Evans (Te Rau Matatini) to mihi the 50 gathered consumers, practitioners and managers who had come from around New Zealand.  Attendance was lower at this forum most likely due to the forthcoming Cutting Edge/APSAD conference in Auckland in early November, but the lower numbers enabled increased active participation, and people took advantage of the greater opportunities to contribute.

This Day’s programme was intentionally focused on two main topics (the interface between mental health and addiction, and workforce development) and more interactive, allowing debate and discussion on individual issues and also bigger picture themes.  As well as Ministry of Health and NCAT updates, key sessions included:

National Alcohol Strategy Action Plan – discussion and preliminary consultation on Addiction Treatment Sector priorities for action

Leadership Session – “Clash of the Titans” – mental health and addictions interface.  Group and panel discussions/debate

Workforce Development Session

Brief presentations followed by discussion on:
• HPCA Act
• Matua Raki
• Family Inclusive Practice
• Gambling workforce issues
• Corporate HR/recruitment view of workforce development
• Te Rau Matatini – Training Scholarships
